by Jonas Wolfe who was a cinema pioneer & the proprietor of the
“Wonderland” in Whitechapel. In
1834 this was the site of the Earle of Effingham Saloon (the Effinghams are
descended from William Howard who was Half-uncle to Anne Boleyn & uncle to
Catherine Howard). In 1861 the
Saloon became the Effingham Theatre and burnt down in 1879. After it was rebuilt
in the 1880s it was known as “The Wonderland” a multi-purpose entertainment
venue primarily supporting Yiddish plays but also as a museum & exhibition
hall plus the venue for boxing matches. In
1909 it was equipped for cinema use & held a Cinematograph Licence showing
films until WWI, it was again destroyed by fire in 1917. Jonas’
home was in Kidderpore Avenue, Childs Hill, London - residents of this street
included Thomas Masaryk (1st president of Chzechoslovakia), Leslie Brooke
(illustrator) & the distinguished Craxton family (Janet – oboist, John
– painter, Antony – TV director, Michael – painter).
