A very handsome and well-proportioned car, from the time when – to many people – the coachbuilders’ art was at its peak. Has lovely ‘cutaway’ front wings, riveted bonnet, stainless lamps, and various desirable features. Recent invoices from Ristes show an engine overhaul, which includes new cylinder head and blocks, and various associated work on ancillaries, brakes, etc, costing in excess of £60,000, and very little, if any, use since. Consequently, the engine is wonderful, and although the cosmetics could do with some tidying, the car now represents excellent value for money.  MoT tested until May 2009.

Chassis No. 171GN.                               Reg No. GY 4976.                          £75,000.

Snippets: Port & Plush Velvet

The link is the addresses that 171GN was first registered to – 1932 St. Swithin’s Lane home to Sandeman Sons & Co Ltd, port & wine shippers & merchant bankers, the location is now home to a fine restaurant.  Five years later the car was owned by M. Bauer who lived at Shutford Manor, Banbury.  The manufacture of Plush (a type of velvet) was established at Shutford during the 18th century & by 1913 the richly dyed plush fabric was being supplied to the Royal Courts in Europe for the staff liveries, silk plush was used in the printing trade & fine plush was used for the lining of airmen’s goggles!
