Until recently with one owner for over forty years, the car is handsome, well-proportioned and correct, including original straight-sided wheels with Dunlop Cord tyres. A particularly appealing aspect of the car is the large doors, giving excellent access to both front and rear, which is a feature not often found on cars such as this. Snippets: Ferries & Kites Sir
Arthur C. Cory-White 2nd Bt took delivery of GUK4 at Ayot Place,
Welwyn.
Sir Arthur’s maternal grandfather was a Welshman - Sir Hugh Owen
(1804/1881) who was born at Y Foel, Llangeinwen, Anglesey;
prior to the opening of the Menai Bridge in 1826 this was the location of
the Caernarfon / Anglesey Ferry which in 1723 sank with the loss of 30 lives.
The
first recorded navigators of the Strait were the 14th & 20th Roman Legions
who in AD61 marched to Llanfairisgaer (on the mainland) under the command of
Seutonius Paulinus who then invaded Anglesey in flat bottomed boats that they
had brought with them.
The fields where they landed near Y Foel are still known as the “Field
of the Long Battle” and the “Field of Bitter Lamentation”.
Sir Cory-White’s “English” grandfather made his fortune in the
shipping & coal industry &
his relatives include Harry Liddell (Alice In Wonderland), Clive
Bell - a member of the famous Bloomsbury Group & Giles Cory who on the 19th
Sept 1692 was pressed to death for refusing a trial during the Salem Witch
Trials in the USA!
After only a few months GUK4 was sold to Howard J White, horologist, whose
father Joseph had
started the family firm in 1860; in 1899 Howard’s brother Alfred
had gone into partnership with Peter Poppe to found White & Poppe whose
petrol engines graced cars & motorcycles; during WWI the company supplied
munitions to the RAF.
Between 1927 & 1946 & prior to emigrating to the USA GUK4 spent
some time with Mrs Brooks-Broadhurst (widow) at Houghton House in Carlisle which
in 1899 was the site of Samuel Franklin Cody’s kite
flying experiment!
Whilst in America GUK4 spent
over 40 years with Albert J. Forte who in 1939 joined the Army Air Corps, he
flew combat missions as a fighter & bomber pilot during WWII & later
trained
glider pilots.
After the War he became the Deputy Administrator for the FAA & in
1957 he founded a real estate firm.
He was a member of the Knights of Malta which was originally established
in 1085 as a community of monks responsible for taking care of the sick at the
Hospital of St John in Jerusalem, in 1530 they moved to Malta & stayed for
268
years during which time it was transformed from a “rock of soft
sandstone” into a well defended island with a wealthy capital city which was
coveted by the then great powers of Europe.
